Suceava, Romania, June 26, 2025
Over 10,000 faithful participated in the annual Path of the Saint procession carrying the relics of St. John the New through the streets of Suceava on Sunday evening.
The traditional procession, organized each year to commemorate the Translation of the Relics of St. John the New to Suceava, began around 6:00 PM after the reliquary containing the holy relics was removed from the Archbishop’s Church of St. George and placed in the outdoor baldachin.
Against the backdrop of cathedral bells, the reliquary was carried by clergy and monastics through the city streets, where it was welcomed by thousands of believers. The procession, stretching hundreds of meters, included priests, monks and nuns, gendarmes with lit torches, young Bukovinians in national costumes, students from the Military College of Câmpulung Moldovenesc, and mountain hunters from Vatra Dornei, reports Monitorul.
The procession stopped at several churches along the way, ultimately returning to St. John the New Monastery. Throughout the entire route, it was met by thousands of faithful, with organizers noting particularly high attendance both in the procession itself and among those waiting along the route.
Notably, 15-20% of participants were Orthodox Christians from Ukraine’s Chernivtsi Province, highlighting the cross-border spiritual significance of the event for the broader Bukovina region.
The pilgrimage celebrating the Translation of the Relics of St. John the New spans four days (June 21-24), with the Archdiocese of Suceava and Rădăuți organizing an extensive liturgical and cultural program. The celebration culminated on Tuesday morning with the Divine Liturgy honoring both the Nativity of St. John the Baptist and the Translation.
