Volunteers from the Petropavlovsk and Kamchatka Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church are continuing to provide assistance following a major earthquake, with a humanitarian warehouse operating at the cathedral in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky for those in need, Daria Albu, head of the diocese’s Information Department, told RIA-Novosti.

On Wednesday, Kamchatka experienced its strongest earthquake since 1952, with a magnitude of 8.7. A tsunami threat was declared, and residents were urged not to approach the shore in dangerous areas. By evening, the tsunami threat was lifted. The government of the Sakhalin Province reported that an emergency regime was declared in the North Kuril district following the earthquake and tsunami.

“There were tremors all day, and even now they’re gradually subsiding. But people can turn to the church (Holy Trinity Cathedral in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky). Our church was open, and volunteers were working on site,” Albu said.

“We have a humanitarian warehouse operating at the cathedral, and we provide food assistance. Anyone who needs help can come to the church. It’s evening now, of course, but tomorrow people can calmly come if they need to," the diocesan head explained.
