Metropolitan Dionysios of Corinth reposes in the Lord

His Eminence Metropolitan Dionysios of Corinth of the Orthodox Church of Greece reposed in the Lord yesterday at the age of 72, reports Romfea.

The hierarch had been hospitalized recently in the ICU of a private hospital in Athens. He served the Church in the episcopal dignity for 19 years.

His body will lie in state for public veneration this evening in the Cathedral of the Holy Apostle Paul in Corinth, where, after the Hierarchical memorial Trisagion, the Holy Gospel will be read according to tradition.

On Saturday morning at 7:00 AM, Matins and the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy will be celebrated in the cathedral by Metropolitan Ieronymos of Kalavryta and Aegialia, acting as locum tenens.

The funeral will be served in the same cathedral on Saturday at 11:00 AM, presided over by Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece.

He will be buried at the Cemetery of the Life-Giving Spring in Corinth.

Met. Dionysios was born in Athens on April 25, 1952.

He graduated from the Theological School of the University of Athens and also attended graduate courses at the University of Thessalonica (Christian Philosophy, Education).

He was ordained to the diaconate in 1974 and to the priesthood in 1979.

He served as Preacher (1977), General Hierarchical Commissioner (1978), and Protosyncellus (1990) of the Holy Metropolis of Chalkida, as Deputy General Director of the Apostolic Ministry (2002), and as Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod (2006).

In 2006, he was elected Metropolitan of Corinth and was consecrated on October 15. His achievements include, among others:

Met. Dionysios was committed to both preserving Orthodox tradition and expanding the Church’s educational and cultural mission. He focused on restoring historic buildings, creating conference and educational centers, and founding specialized schools for Byzantine music and iconography. His work emphasized theological education and cultural preservation, establishing programs for catechists, parents, and ongoing religious instruction while creating spaces for ecclesiastical arts and exhibitions.

Alongside this institutional building, he maintained a strong commitment to social welfare through extensive philanthropic programs including soup kitchens, food and clothing banks, nursing homes, and student scholarships. He also worked to preserve the Church’s historical legacy by rescuing and organizing the Metropolis archives, and represented the Greek Orthodox Church in important international religious events and interfaith dialogues.

He participated as a member of the Committee for Church-State Dialogue appointed by the hierarchy regarding clergy salaries and the utilization of ecclesiastical property.

On August 7, 2025, after being tested for a year through illness and enduring it with patience and perseverance, he surrendered his spirit into the hands of God.
