On Sunday, September 7, 2025, the Orthodox Parish of St. Ephraim the Syrian held a garden party in Cambridge marking the official launch of Project Nisibis (the birthplace of St. Ephraim)—an appeal to raise funds for the acquisition of a permanent place of worship. Around 100 parishioners and friends gathered in the idyllic grounds of Clare Hall to enjoy a time of fellowship and to learn about the project.

The evening was opened with a prayer by Fr. Evgeny Selensky, Acting Dean of the Diocesan Region of Eastern England. Fr. Evgeny read a letter of greeting from His Grace Bishop Matthew of Sourozh in which Vladyka expressed his support and blessing for the project to establish a dedicated Orthodox church in the heart of Cambridge which, God willing, will be a beacon of the light of Christ in this great University city of learning and culture for centuries to come.

The parish choir, under the direction of Anna Pechenyuk, gave a short concert of liturgical music that delighted the audience with the perfectly blended sound of English and Russian voices. One of the singers, Dr. Nikolai Kazantsev, who is also an accomplished cellist, rounded off the evening with two of Bach’s cello suites.

The Parish of St. Ephraim was founded over fifty years ago by Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh of blessed memory. It has grown from a handful of people gathering for the Liturgy once a month to a large multinational community with a full cycle of services served predominantly in English. The acquisition of a permanent place of worship will enable the missionary outreach of the parish to all who seek the fullness of life in Christ. All contributions to this endeavour will be gratefully received. Details of the appeal can be found at www.camchurchfund.com.
