The Orthodox Church in America’s Romanian Episcopate issued a statement on Friday, September 12, about the assassination of conservative political activist and media personality Charlie Kirk.

The Episcopate’s statement mourns the assassination and calls for believers to counter hatred with love, fear with courage, and division with unity in prayer, drawing inspiration from Christian martyrs and placing trust in Jesus Christ as a source of peace and strength. The statement emphasizes the need for increased prayer for national and global peace, healing, and comfort for Kirk’s family, while ultimately pointing to the Christian hope of eternal life where suffering will end.

Read the full statement:

The assassination of Charlie Kirk, a faithful and courageous advocate for traditional values in our country, is yet another appalling tragedy striking our nation. Saddened by this act of violence and loss of life, we place our trust in the One who has conquered death itself, our Lord Jesus Christ – our peace, our strength and our refuge!

Nourished by the examples of the blessed martyrs of the Church, together with the unfettered and courageous witness of the most recent suffering servants in many places in the world, as Christ loving people and right believing faithful, we are called to respond to hatred not with despair, but with love; not with fear, but with courage; not with division, but with unity in prayer. As our Holy Orthodox Church does in every service, we must pray even more fervently for peace in our nation and in the world, for healing of hearts, and for the comfort of all who mourn, especially for Charlie’s wife, young children and entire family.

May the light of Christ, which no darkness can extinguish, guide us all, our entire nation, through this time of tribulation. With faith and fervent hope, we look beyond the turmoil of the present moment to the everlasting Kingdom, where “God will wipe away every tear” (Revelation 21:4).
