Former Metropolitan of Kition Chrysostomos reposes in the Lord

Metropolitan Chrysostomos, former bishop of Kition, reposed yesterday, October 5, at the age of 87.

The Metropolis of Tamassos and Oreinis of the Church of Cyprus announced:

A short while ago His Eminence Metropolitan Chrysostomos, former Metropolitan of Kition, departed to the Lord. He was a native of the God-saved Diocese of Tamassos, from the pious town of Palaemetocho. In humility we pray that the Lord of Glory may forgive his soul and place it in the land of the living. May God grant him rest.

He served the Church in the episcopal order for 52 years. His funeral will be served on Thursday at the Holy Monastery of St. George Kontos.

Metropolitan Chrysostomos (Machairiotis) was born in Palaemetocho in the district of Nicosia on June 4, 1938.

In 1951, he was accepted as a novice at the Holy Monastery of Panagia of Macheras. In 1955, he was ordained a deacon.

In 1962, he entered the Law School of the University of Athens, graduating in 1966. He continued his studies at the Theological School of the same university, graduating in 1970.

On June 7, 1970, he was ordained a priest and subsequently elevated to archimandrite.

On October 24, 1973, he was unanimously elected Metropolitan of Kition, and two days later was consecrated bishop.

During his 46 years leading the Metropolis of Kition, he represented the Church of Cyprus at various international gatherings and Orthodox events, including the 2016 Pan-Orthodox Council in Crete.

On June 19, 2019, Metropolitan Chrysostomos submitted his resignation from the Metropolis of Kition to the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus, citing reasons of old age.
