Athens, October 24, 2025
His Eminence Metropolitan Tychikos of Paphos of the Church of Cyrpus has been hospitalized in Athens after feeling unwell following his recent trip to the Patriarchate of Constantinople, reports the Union of Orthodox Journalists.
Video shows His Eminence in the hospital with physician and priest Fr. Evangelos Papanikolaou by his side:
According to Fr. Evangelos, Met. Tychikos had been ill for several days, and doctors had advised him not to travel to the Patriarchate. Despite these warnings, he made the trip, during which his condition worsened due to exhaustion and stress.
Upon returning to Athens, he experienced chest pain and facial discomfort. He was admitted to the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center on Wednesday, October 22, and later transferred to another Athens hospital for further examinations.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Met. Tychikos offered words of gratitude and faith:
Glory to God! Glory to God! I thank you, Fr. Evangelos, for being with me both during the journey and here. I ask for the prayers of all, just as I pray for Paphos, which I love deeply, for all of Cyprus, and for every Christian. Pray that this trial passes and that better days come for our Church. Glory to God!
His hospitalization comes just days after the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople upheld the Church of Cyprus’ May 2025 decision to depose him as Metropolitan of Paphos, concluding his ecclesiastical appeal. Despite procedural issues acknowledged in the Cypriot proceedings, the Constantinople Synod still unanimously confirmed the decision and urged him to accept it for the peace and unity of the Church.
Meanwhile, the faithful of Paphos have rallied behind Met. Tychikos.
