The Church of Cyprus is allocating the proceeds of a fundraiser conducted this summer toward the purchase of fire trucks for the needs of fire-affected communities.

A fundraiser was held in Cypriot churches on Sunday, August 3, with the aim of supporting those affected by fires in the mountainous region of Limassol, reports the Orthodoxia News Agency.

“Since we have been informed in the meantime that the state intends to purchase fire trucks for all fire-affected communities that do not have such vehicles, the Church of Cyprus has decided … that the amount of €200,000, which constitutes part of the amount collected from the fundraiser conducted by the Church of Cyprus, be deposited into the special account opened by the Auditor General of the Republic of Cyprus, with the aim that this amount be allocated for the purchase of fire trucks in the fire-affected communities,” the announcement states.

A relevant check was presented yesterday, December 10, by His Beatitude Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus to Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou.

“Furthermore, we inform that the amount of €155,000, which constitutes the remaining amount from the fundraiser, as well as other amounts collected from other Church organizations, will be allocated to all the affected communities … for the support of those affected by the fires in the mountainous region of Limassol,” the announcement from the Central Church Fund concludes.
