Kostrina, Zarkapattia Province, Ukraine, December 12, 2025
A monastery of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church suffered from a devastating fire on Wednesday.
A fire broke out at the Holy Protection Men’s Monastery in the village of Kostrina in the Mukachevo Diocese on the evening of December 10. According to the Information and Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, citing the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Zakarpattia Oblast, the emergency call was received by rescuers at 7:29 PM.
The flames were first spotted by clergy living nearby, who immediately arrived at the scene and notified the rescue service.
The fire started in the monastery’s residential building, a single-story wooden structure with an attic. No one was in the building at the time of the incident, but the structure was completely destroyed. According to His Eminence Metropolitan Theodore of Mukachevo, the blaze was caused by electrical wiring, not arson.
“The fire spread rapidly through the wooden structures, but there was no threat to the nearby architectural monument—the Church of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos,” rescuers reported.
The fire was extinguished after two and a half hours.
The abbot and Met. Theodore have appealed for help in restoring the residential building:
