A new bishop was consecrated this weekend for the Archdiocese of Orthodox Churches of Russian Tradition in Western Europe (Moscow Patriarchate). It is believed that the newly consecrated Bishop Augustin (McBeth) of Taldom is the first native Scot to serve as an Orthodox bishop since before the Great Schism.

Fr. Augustin, who previously served as priest of the English-speaking Church of the Archangel Gabriel in Glasgow, was consecrated on Sunday, December 14, at the Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky in Paris, the Archdiocese reports.

The consecration was preceded by preparatory services on Saturday when His Eminence Metropolitan John of Dubna, the head of the Archdiocese, presided over the Rite of Nomination followed by the All-Night Vigil.

On Sunday morning, Met. John received the Confession of Faith and oath of fidelity from the bishop-elect. The Metropolitan then presided over the Divine Liturgy during which the consecration took place, concelebrating with His Eminence Archbishop Simon of Brussels and Belgium (Moscow Patriarchate) and His Grace Bishop Bishop Syméon of Domodedovo, one of Met. John’s auxiliary bishops.

Many members of Bishop Augustin’s family attended the consecration, along with a large delegation from his former parish in Glasgow.

The services were livestreamed by the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral:
