Uncut Mountain Press has released Bible, Church, History: A Theological Examination by Hieromartyr Hilarion (Troitsky), marking the first time this comprehensive work has been available in English.

St. Hilarion (Troitsky), Archbishop of Vereya, was a prominent theologian, preacher, and defender of the Russian Church who suffered persecution during the early years of Bolshevik rule. A contemporary of Patriarch Tikhon, he vigorously opposed both the communist regime’s attacks on the Church and the Bolshevik-supported Living Church with its renovationist agenda and Gregorian schism.

This new publication represents the second volume in Uncut Mountains’ St. Hilarion series, following On the Dogma of the Church. The book presents St. Hilarion’s Scriptural analysis of the Church, examining both Old and New Testament teachings on the ecclesia. The work introduces his concept of “Churchliness,” exploring both the universal significance and intimate particularity of the Church’s impact on humanity.

The volume compiles over a dozen treatises and articles from St. Hilarion’s tenure at the Moscow Theological Academy, addressing topics including authentic unity and freedom, the ecclesiology of prophetic schools in ancient Israel, Orthodox repentance, Scripture’s role in Christian life, St. Peter (Mogila’s) confession, Christ’s Nativity in salvation history, and related themes.

We must pray to Hieromartyr Hilarion that the Lord, through his prayers, first of all grant us this courage—the courage to defend the freedom of the Church, to defend the canons, that the Lord grant us the wisdom to understand everything, not to be deceived by our spiritual or hierarchical titles and knowledge, and not to become traitors.

In his research, author Dr. Scott Kenworthy consulted a wealth of previously unused and inaccessible primary sources, including St. Tikhon’s letters and encyclicals, documents from the Soviet leadership and secret police files, and materials from a dozen archives in five countries in order to deliver a comprehensive examination of this pivotal era in North American and Russian Orthodox Christianity and St. Tikhon’s tremendous influence on it.
