Four monks from the Holy Mount Athos were injured in a serious car accident on Tuesday afternoon at the Longoú toll station on the E65 highway, in the traffic lane from Karditsa to Trikala.

According to local reports, one of the four monks, approximately 40 years old, sustained severe head injuries and was intubated at Trikala Hospital before being transferred to the University Hospital of Larissa, where his condition requires intensive medical monitoring.

The four monks, who are from a cell under Iveron Monastery on Mt. Athos, were headed from Athens to Meteora, where one of them had previously been a monk, and then planned to continue to the Holy Mountain.

The other three monks, who suffered lighter injuries, were transported to Trikala Hospital where they are being treated in the surgical ward. Their condition is reported as stable and out of danger, and they’re undergoing all necessary examinations.

The circumstances of the accident are being investigated by the relevant authorities.
