Metropolitan Amphilochios of Ganos (Constantinople) reposes in the Lord

Metropolitan Amphilochios of Ganos and Chora of the Patriarchate of Constantinople reposed in the Lord late in the evening on Saturday, February 14, 2026, in Rhodes.

The news was announced by Archimandrite Nektarios Pokkias, who wrote: “Our sweet elder Amphilochios, former Metropolitan of Ganos and Chora, departed to eternity a few minutes ago. May his memory be eternal. May we have his blessing... Now he is near his elder, St. Amphilochios of Makris, reports Romfea.

He served in the episcopal dignity for 21 years.

His funeral will take place on Thursday, February 19, at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in Rhodes. He will be buried at the cemetery of the Holy Monastery of Archangel Michael Tharri.

Met. Amphilochios was born in 1938 in Lardos, Rhodes. He studied theology at the Patmian Ecclesiastical School and the Holy Theological School of Halki. He was ordained a deacon in 1962 and a presbyter in 1963.

During his ecclesiastical service, he served as supervisor of the Theological School of Halki, priest in various monasteries, preacher on Patmos and the surrounding islands, and professor at the Patmian Ecclesiastical School for many years. He was distinguished for his missionary and spiritual work and was particularly connected with the spiritual tradition of Patmos and the guidance of young people.

On June 15, 2005, he was unanimously elected by the Holy Synod as Bishop of Erythrae, as assistant to Metropolitan Kyrillos of Rhodes, and was again unanimously elected Metropolitan of New Zealand on October 13 of the same year. He was subsequently elected Metropolitan of Ganos and Chora, from which position he later retired, bearing the title of former Metropolitan.

Until recent years, he remained an active spiritual father and beloved hierarch, with a presence on Aegean islands, particularly Agathonisi.
