Orthodox Christians from multiple jurisdictions gathered in Atlanta for the annual Georgia March for Life yesterday.

Known participants came from ROCOR, Serbian, Greek, and Antiochian parishes, reports the Union of Orthodox Journalists.

Before the march itself, Fr. Daniel Iliev and Dn. Mark King of St. Mary of Egypt Orthodox Church (ROCOR) led a moleben to the Mother of God on the grounds of the state capitol, with the faithful holding crosses and banners. A procession around the capitol followed the service.

The march’s opening speech was delivered by Georgia state senator Ed Setzler, a parishioner at St. Stephen’s Antiochian Orthodox Church. Setzler described how the pro-life movement first drew him into political life and encouraged those present to step outside their comfort zones.

Setzler also spoke about the Theotokos, saying:

“Praise God,” she said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord.” She made the ultimate pro-life decision in all of human history. Through that Christ came into this world that we might all be saved and reconciled to God. I share that with you because she was called outside of her comfort zone as a teenager. I want to challenge you to be prepared to step outside of your comfort zone. And maybe outside of your comfort zone to even be here today.

Setzler closed with a prayer asking God to move the hearts of those assembled and draw them closer to Him.

Orthodox Christians have participated in pro-life marches in the United States and abroad for decades, with a particularly strong presence and record of leadership at the national March for Life in Washington, DC.
