Hundreds of parishioners and friends of St. George Orthodox Christian Church gathered Saturday morning in Washington City for the raising of a dome over the church building, near the intersection of North Overland Trails Drive and North Coral Canyon Boulevard.

The building itself is still under construction. Ground was broken on the dirt lot chosen for the church’s location in April 2025. The church parish is actually not named after the local city but instead named after the Christian Martyr Saint George.

The parish priest, the Rev. Mykel Giannakakos, led a prayer service and anointed the dome with holy water before it was raised into position. He spoke about the significance of church architecture in the history of Eastern Orthodox Christianity.
