Tehran, April 2, 2026
The St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox cathedral in the Iranian capital of Tehran sustained damage from two missile strikes on the morning of April 1, according to a statement from the Russian Embassy in Iran.
Windows and doors were blown out in the main building and auxiliary outbuildings. The Department of External Relations also notes that the central gates, one church window, and a glass icon case were broken. The embassy attributed the damage to American-Israeli military action.
The Russian Home for the Elderly, located on the grounds adjacent to the cathedral, also suffered significant damage, including a partially collapsed roof. Elderly residents continue to live at the facility as dependents. The embassy reported no casualties or injuries.
The parish community now has no access to its church on the eve of Holy Week and Pascha.
The cathedral is listed on Iran’s national register of cultural heritage.
