Munich, May 6, 2026
Hieromonk Seraphim (Rose) has been canonized by the Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, which recently met in Munich.
Work is now underway to prepare for the liturgical proclamation of that decision, the date of which is yet to be determined.
Fr. Seraphim, known as an ascetic spiritual struggler, theologian, and author, has been venerated throughout the Orthodox world since his repose in 1982. In February 2023, he was locally canonized in one diocese of the Georgian Orthodox Church.
In December 2025, The ROCOR Synod established a commission to study his life and legacy towards the possibility of canonizing him for broader veneration. The investigation was led by His Grace Bishop James of Sonora, who knew Fr. Seraphim personally.
The Epistle of the Council of Bishops published yesterday states:
Responding to the numerous appeals of the faithful, the Council of Bishops, having recognised the righteous course of life of the ever-memorable Hieromonk Seraphim (Rose), has blessed the process of preparing his ecclesiastical glorification among the ranks of our venerable Fathers.
ROCOR’s news report on the Council provides more details. On Saturday, May 2:
the Council considered the report of Bishop James of Sonora, chairman of the commission for the study of the life, legacy and veneration of the ever-memorable Hieromonk Seraphim (Rose). On the basis of this report, the following determination was made: 1) To receive the report; 2) Having recognised the righteous course of life of the ever-memorable Hieromonk Seraphim, to bless the process of preparing his ecclesiastical glorification among the ranks of our venerable Fathers; 3) To invoke God’s blessing upon the further work of the aforementioned commission under the chairmanship of His Grace Bishop James.
Given the variety of wording used by different Synods to describe the canonization and glorification process,[1] OrthoChristian contacted a ROCOR hierarch for clarification as to whether the final administrative decision had been made, or whether the process of consideration continues, and what it means that the commission headed by Bp. James, originally established to investigate Fr. Seraphim’s life and legacy, is continuing its work.
OrthoChristian was informed that the final administrative decision about canonizing Fr. Seraphim has been made, and that “preparing his ecclesiastical glorification” refers specifically to preparations for the liturgical proclamation of that decision. Thus, the commission is no longer investigating Fr. Seraphim’s life, but now preparing the necessary texts for his glorification, including his official hagiography and liturgical services in his honor.
