The wonderworking and myrrh-streaming Hawaiian Iveron Icon of the Mother of God visited Saipan last week, where the island’s small Orthodox Christian community venerated it amid ongoing recovery from Super Typhoon Sinlaku.
The icon’s visit was led by Fr. Nectarios Yangson, rector of the Holy Virgin of Vladimir Orthodox Church—the first and only Orthodox parish in Micronesia—and custodian of the icon, reports the Orthodox Christian Church of Saipan.
Services were held in a building that formerly served as the island’s post office.
During the visit, Fr. Nectarios carried the icon to the summit of Mt. Tapochau, the highest point on Saipan, where prayers were offered for the people of the Mariana Islands. The icon was raised and turned toward the north, south, east, and west. Prayers were offered for the sick, for typhoon survivors, and for the growth of the Orthodox Church in the region.

The icon was also brought to Saipan’s docks, where Fr. Nectarios blessed a vessel loaded with supplies bound for the island of Tinian as part of Operation Fueling Hope. As the blessing was offered, rain began to fall on those gathered at the harbor.
Tinian, home to approximately 1,000 people including 300 children, was among the hardest-hit areas when Super Typhoon Sinlaku struck the Northern Mariana Islands on April 13–16. The storm knocked out the entire electrical grid across Saipan and Tinian, leaving communities without power or water. Officials have given no timeline for restoration, with some estimates reaching up to six months.
The Holy Virgin of Vladimir parish has been coordinating emergency fuel funding for relief vessels operated by traditional navigator captains from the Caroline Islands, whose converted power boats have been making daily supply runs between Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and Guam. Each roundtrip circuit costs approximately $4,000 in fuel. The parish has raised $23,100 toward a $40,000 goal through a GiveSendGo campaign.

“To the world, these may have seemed like simple events on a distant island in the middle of the Pacific,” Fr. Nectarios wrote of the icon’s visit. “But Heaven sees differently.”
