The Region of Central Macedonia has approved funding of approximately $6 million (€5.3 million) through the European Structural and Investment Funds for infrastructure works at seven sites on Mt. Athos.

The projects cover the Holy Monasteries of Karakallou, Koutloumousiou, Xenophontos, the Great Lavra, Simonos Petras, and St. Paul’s, as well as the Skete of St. Anna, reports Orthodoxia.info.

At Karakallou, maintenance and restoration works are planned for the catholikon and tower. At Koutloumousiou, part of the western wing of the monastery is to be restored and upgraded. A new wing is to be constructed at Xenophontos.

At the Skete of St. Anna, which falls under the Great Lavra, the project concerns the Holy Cell of the Dormition of the Theotokos, associated with the late Elder Damascene. The works there also include reinforcement of retaining walls and landscaping of the surrounding area.

The old olive press at Simonos Petras monastery is to be converted into an exhibition space. The same project includes construction of a mezzanine level to house iconography and tailoring workshops.

At St. Paul’s, restoration of a wing will allow for the creation of elder care facilities.

According to Governor Aidona, the projects aim to keep the building infrastructure safe and functional for monastic life and for visitors to Mt. Athos.
