The Church of Cyprus has moved its program to counter low birth rates into the implementation phase, offering financial support to families having a third child or more.

The initiative was launched with the backing of Archbishop Georgios, who has expressed concern over shifts in the island’s demographic and religious makeup, particularly among its Greek Orthodox population. Church officials cite a fertility rate of around 1.4, below replacement level, alongside an aging population as reasons for the program, reports Philenews.

Benefits apply retroactively to children born on or after January 1, 2025, and are paid out at several milestones: €1,500 ($1,710 today) at Orthodox Baptism, and €1,000 ($1,140) each at elementary school, junior high school, and high school registration.

Families also receive €100 ($115) vouchers for food and basic necessities twice yearly, at Christmas and Pascha, continuing until the child turns 18.

To qualify, at least one parent must hold a Cypriot ID, and the parents must have married in the Orthodox Church. The child must be born after January 1, 2025, and be the third or later child by birth order. At least one parent must be Orthodox Christian, and the family must show permanent Cyprus residency via a recent utility bill.

The Holy Archdiocese says the program responds to data showing that births to non-Cypriot parents have risen disproportionately compared to births to Cypriot parents, a gap that widens further for third, fourth, and later children. Officials also point to demographic changes in the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus as a factor shaping their concerns for the government-controlled areas.
