A hierarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church visited His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine this week in a show of support for the persecuted Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
His Eminence Metropolitan Grigory of Düsseldorf and All Germany of the Serbian Church previously visited His Eminence Metropolitan Evlogy of Sumy, who is facing an ongoing legal case brought against him by the state because he publicly spoke about how the majority of Local Churches support the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church rather than the schismatic state organization, the “Orthodox Church of Ukraine.”
Met. Grigory then had a lengthy meeting with Metropolitan Onuphry in Kiev on Friday, August 7. He wrote about the visit on Instagram, describing the Ukrainian primate as a holy man:
Today I met with His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine, primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
I spoke with this holy man for a full five hours. The conversation unfolded in a spirit of love, deep understanding, and brotherly closeness. I felt as if I were confessing my soul to a saint.
All the effort and the thousands of kilometers I traveled for this meeting found their true meaning. Holy people are truly worth seeking out, even if you have to cross the whole world to find them.
The Serbian hierarch’s visit is a sign of spiritual unity between the Serbian and Ukrainian Orthodox churches at a time when the UOC is under pressure, and as an affirmation of the UOC’s canonical standing within world Orthodoxy.
