Michigan parish supporting anti-human trafficking efforts (+VIDEO)

A Michigan parish of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia is helping to raise awareness about human trafficking and support young victims.

In a video from St. Vladimir Orthodox Church in Ann Arbor, Archpriest Gregory Joyce and parishioner Julia McGlone discuss ways the parish can help address this major problem, noting that the U.S. is #1 in the world for human trafficking.

The parish’s first form of involvement is a school supply drive, with the proceeds going to a local shelter that provides a safe space for teenage girls who are survivors of human trafficking. In addition to providing necessary school supplies, the drive helps raise awareness about human trafficking.

Second, volunteers from the parish will visit the shelter in a few weeks to help with property maintenance.

Third, parishioners are encouraged to prepare activities or workshops to teach particular skills, such as handicrafts, to the girls living at the shelter.

The wonderworking Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God was present throughout the services, remaining in the church for the veneration of the faithful.
