Fr. Andrew Louth, professor emeritus at Durham University, was honored for his contributions to Patristic theology during a recent international conference in Romania.
His Eminence Metropolitan Teofan of Moldavia and Bukovina presented Fr. Andrew with the Moldavian Cross, the highest distinction awarded by his Metropolis, in recognition of his work studying and promoting Patristic theology, reports the Basilica News Agency.
The award was presented last Friday during the Patristic Tradition Today international symposium held at the Metropolitan Museum in Iași.
This year’s symposium focused on the theme, The Reception of the Church Fathers in Modern Thought, examining how the writings of the Church Fathers have shaped modern theology, philosophy, and cultural discourse.

Special guests included John Behr, Lewis Ayres, and Bogdan G. Bucur, along with about 20 scholars specializing in Patristics, theology, and philosophy.
Fr. Andrew is a Fellow of the British Academy and a leading figure in contemporary Patristic studies. He has served as editor of Sobornost and of academic series devoted to early Christianity, including Oxford Early Christian Studies and Early Christian Writings. His research has covered the life and work of St. Gregory Palamas, the secular and humanist tradition in late Byzantine theology, and the understanding of love as a theological virtue across the Eastern and Western Christian traditions.
Ordained to the priesthood in 2003, Fr. Andrew is the author of several major works, including:
