After eight years, a cross is back atop the main dome of the Orthodox Church of St. Olga in Františkovy Lázně, Czech Republic.

It was raised again at noon on Wednesday, October 21, following extensive restoration and construction work after being taken down for safety reasons, the parish reports.

The parish says the day, the hour and the length of the cross’s absence carry special meaning. In its announcement, the parish writes:

Wednesday is the day when the Orthodox tradition commemorates the Cross of Christ. Noon corresponds to the Biblical sixth hour, which in Orthodox liturgical tradition is associated with the remembrance of Christ’s Crucifixion and his sacrifice for the salvation of the world.

The number eight also has special significance in Christian symbolism. While seven days represent the completeness of created time, the eighth day symbolizes Christ’s Resurrection, eternity, and the beginning of a new creation. The return of the cross after eight years can thus also be seen as a sign of renewal and a new beginning.

Further, according to traditional dating, October 21 is also the day in the year 925 when the relics of St. Ludmila were transferred from Tetín to the Church of St. George at Prague Castle.

The church was built between 1887 and 1889. According to the parish, it was built for Orthodox spa guests from various countries and has become a lasting part of the Czech landscape and of the history of Františkovy Lázně.

The ongoing reconstruction of the church is possible thanks in part to a grant from the Karlovy Vary Region.

The parish concludes: “After eight years, the cross has once again risen above the city as a sign of Christ’s victory over death, of hope, resurrection and the continuation of spiritual life. May it bring peace and tranquility to our city and the whole world!”
