Ukrainian Orthodox Church glorifies several icons and a saint

The last meeting of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in 2017 was held yesterday at the residence of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry on the territory of the Holy Dormition-Kiev Caves Lavra. The session, chaired by His Beatitude made a number of important announcements, including the decision to add five icons and one saint to the Church’s liturgical calendar, reports the site of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

In particular, the Holy Synod blessed to glorify:

  • The “Do Not Lament Me, O Mother” Icon of the Mother of God in St. Catherine’s Cathedral in Kherson, to be celebrated on the 10th Friday after Pascha;

  • The Lugansk Mother of God Icon in Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Lugansk, to be celebrated on May 31/June 13;

  • The Mokhnatyn Icon of the Mother of God in the village of Mokhnatyn in the Chernigov Province, to be celebrated on the 10th Friday after Pascha;

  • The “O, All-Hymned Mother” Icon of the Mother of God in the Annunciation Monastery in Nizhyn, to be celebrated on October 6/19;

  • The “Impassable Gate” Icon of the Mother of God in the St. Sergius Monastery in the Gorlovka Diocese in the Donetsk Province, to be celebrated on the Tuesday following Pentecost;

  • Pelagia Gorlenko, to be locally venerated in the Nizhyn Diocese, to be celebrated on October 8/21.

The Holy Synod also approved the icon, troparion, and kontakion to St. Pelagia, and to consider her remains as holy relics.

At the same meeting, the Holy Synod also approved the establishment of four new monasteries throughout Ukraine.
