A Georgian royal couple living in Europe, Prince John Bagrationi and the famous model Kristina Dzidziguri, were married in an Orthodox service in the ancient Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in the town of Mtskheta, the former capital of Georgia, on Sunday, reports Blagovest-Info.

Svetitskhoveli is historically the place of coronation and burial of Georgian kings. Ten are known to have been buried there, although only six tombs have been found, including that of Erekle II (1720-1798), whose descendant Prince John is.

Prince John also descends from various European monarchs. He grew up in Madrid, and later also in lived in the UK, and finally settled in Paris. Prince John and Princess Kristin had a civil marriage in Spain four years ago, but now decided to have a Church ceremony in Georgia. This is Prince John’s second marriage.

Kristina Dzidziguri is the face of the French perfume Dior. Before leaving Georgia she was a soloist in the famous dancing and singing ensemble Erisioni. In 2008 she was named Vice Miss Georgia.

“Our common friends told me that Kristina would be a good friend for me and acquaint me and bring me closer to Georgia and Georgians, but when I saw her, I wanted more than just friendship,” Prince John has said of his bride.

Following the ceremony, a festive gala dinner was held, with His Holiness Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II receiving the newlyweds and their guests from the Bagrationi family and other European royal families. His Holiness and his locum tenens Metropolitan Shio (Mudzhiri) of Senaki and Chkhorotsqu both wished the couple happiness.
