Mt. Athos, November 21, 2018
A note left by a 61-year-old just before disappearing on Mt. Athos is being examined by the authorities as they look for any clues to shed light on the man’s mysterious disappearance.
As vimaorthodoxias.gr reports, the man had been living with his sister and was allegedly a social and courteous person who did not cause any problems. However, as his friends have attested, he had a great passion for gambling that he struggled to overcome.
To combat his passion, he would regularly visit Mt. Athos for calm down and find himself again, and, after staying for a few days, he would return home.
He recently felt very stressed because of a lot of pressure from those around him about his gambling, so he decided to set out for Mt. Athos again. He reportedly arrived on Mt. Athos on November 6, and visited as usual, according to the monks who know the man.
However, all trace of the man was lost on November 8. The monks searched for the man but only found some personal belongings. They also alerted the police who carried out a wider investigation. Some of his clothes and his visa to Mt. Athos were found on the rocks outside Xenophontos Monastery.
A note was also found, which read: “I am dedicating my life to the Panagia.”
His friends noted that seemingly overnight he started going to church more, which was unusual for him outside of his trips to Mt. Athos.
