On October 15, Fr. Mark Tyson, formerly of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese (ACROD), a jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in America, was received into the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR), citing irreconcilable disagreement with Constantinople’s recent actions in Ukraine.

Now a second ACROD priest has made the same move.

In a letter to the parish posted yesterday on the site of the ROCOR Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Washington, D.C., rector Archpriest Victor Potapov introduces and welcomes Fr. Nectarios Trevino to the parish.

As Fr. Victor writes, Fr. Nectarios formerly served at the Nativity of Our Lord Orthodox Church, located in Manassas, VA, but after 16 years in ACROD, he “left the EP because of its illegal actions in the Ukraine, and has been officially accepted into ROCOR by our ruling bishop, His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion, and attached to St. John's.”

Fr. Victor further writes: “Father is a man of high moral integrity. A former Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force, Fr. Nectarios is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center (Juris Doctorate) and has honorably served his country's military. Fr. Nectarios is 65, married and has two adult sons.”

On October 28, an entire parish in Italy switched from Constantinople to ROCOR, and in Stockholm, 16 people were expelled from their Constantinople parish for no longer recognizing Patriarch Bartholomew as their legitimate hierarch.

The website of Fr. Nectarios’ former parish offers a fuller biography:

He was the U.S. Air Force Intelligence Company Grade Officer of the Year in 1985 and was a U.S. Air Force ROTC Distinguished Graduate. Fr. Trevino is a graduate of the State University of New York – Albany (Bachelor of Science, Liberal Studies), Southwest Texas State University (Bachelor of Arts, Political Science) and Georgetown University Law Center (Juris Doctorate) as well as the U.S. Air Force’s Squadron Officer’s School, the Armed Forces Staff College of National Defense University, and the U.S. Air Force Air University, while a National Defense Fellow at the Mershon Center at The Ohio State University. The Ecumenical Patriarchate knowingly aligned itself with clergymen of ill repute when it lifted the ecclesiastical sanctions against Philaret Denisenko and Makary Maletich and received all of their respective groups’ clergy—at least in the person of Philaret Denisenko, the leader of the schismatic “Kiev Patriarchate” (KP).

Following his conscience, Fr. Mark Tyson recently moved from the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to ROCOR due to Constantinople's recent actions in Ukraine. With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion (Kapral), Fr. Mark offered us the following interview in which he speaks more in-depth about his time in ACROD, his reasons for transferring to ROCOR, and what the future holds for him.

Therefore Constantinople’s current actions force us to suspect that His All-Holiness is not free in his actions; that behind him are specific powers are that are very far from Christ’s Church and which are following their own ill-fated aims.

The illicit actions of the Church of Constantinople are able to suffer no canonical defence and constitute a grave and dangerous injustice against the traditions of Orthodoxy, as well as a shocking disregard for the spiritual welfare of the sheep of Christ (cf. John 10.3, 11).
