Kiev, February 2, 2019
Archimandrite Ephraim, the abbot of the Athonite monastery of Vatopedi, spoke with several hierarchs of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church on the phone today as he was receiving treatment at a clinic in Kiev. According to information received by the Union of Orthodox Journalists, they had tried to visit him in the clinic but were prevented by the Ukrainian Security Service.
The abbot arrived in Kiev yesterday to attend the enthronement of “Metropolitan” Epiphany Dumenko as the primate of the schismatic Ukrainian Church tomorrow on behalf of Constantinople (as Patriarch Bartholomew gave him the ultimatum of going to the enthronement or being suspended from the priesthood) but suffered a heart attack soon after arriving. Fr. Ephraim has a history of heart problems, having suffered hearts attack before and having recently undergone a heart stent operation.
The hierarchs wished Archimandrite Ephraim a speedy recovery, and he, in turn, asked that they convey his love to His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine and to all the hierarchs of the canonical Ukrainian Church, reports the site of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
Fr. Ephraim left Ukraine later in the day to continue treatment in a foreign clinic.
Epiphany Dumenko, the head of the Ukrainian schismatic-nationalist church, visited Fr. Ephraim in the hospital earlier today and wished him a speedy recovery.
