The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America has announced the convening of a monastic assembly at the Holy Monastery of St. Nektarios in Roscoe, New York in September.
Archbishop Elpidophoros, the newly-enthroned head of the Archdiocese, decided to convene the assembly September 21-22, “wishing to further promote the value and importance of monasticism in our Orthodox tradition and the spiritual life of the faithful,” the Archdiocese reports.
The abbots and abbesses of all the Greek monasteries in America as well as the hierarchs of the Archdiocese will take part in the assembly. The Greek Archdiocese of America has 19 monasteries under its jurisdiction, the majority of which were founded by Elder Ephraim, the spiritual child of the great Elder Joseph the Hesychast and former abbot of Philotheou Monastery who now resides at St. Anthony’s Monastery in Arizona, including the Monastery of St. Nektarios where the assembly will be held.
The hierarchy of the Archdiocese currently includes Abp. Elpidophoros, 8 diocesan metropolitans, and 4 auxiliary bishops. Abp. Elpidophoros served as abbot of Holy Trinity Monastery on the island of Halki in Turkey from 2011.
The agenda includes presentations from the hierarchs and monastery heads and will conclude with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy on September 22.
