Serbian Patriarch Irinej to visit Zagreb

Patriarch Irinej of the Serbian Orthodox Church will be visiting Croatia's capital from June 7 - 9, the Zagreb Vecernji List newspaper reported on its web site on June 2.

The Patriarch, according to the site, will meet Croatian President Ivo Josipovic, Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic and Cardinal Josip Bozanic. Patriarch Irinej will accompany officials from the Holy Synod on the visit which will be organized at the highest level, the paper said.

"The Patriarch will come to consecrate the Church of St. Sava as part of the new 'Kantakuzina Katarina Brankovic' high school building and the spiritual center in Zagreb's Sveti Duh street," the Metropolitan of Zagreb and Ljubljana and all of Italy, Jovan Pavlovic, told the daily.

The metropolitan added that Patriarch Irinej' visit to Zagreb would be particularly important to establishing good relations between the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church after the wars in the region.

"This is the first time ever that the Serbian Orthodox Church's entire Synod will arrive in Croatia for meeting with top officials of the Catholic Church in Croatia - the Croatian Bishop Conference's Permanent Council," Jure Zecevic, head of the department of ecumenical theology department at Zagreb's School of Catholic Theology, said.
