The head of one of the oldest churches on earth will come to America to enthrone the new head of one of the largest Orthodox Christian Churches in North America. Metropolitan Philip Saliba, who in nearly 50 years as leader of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church in North America fostered a growth in membership and parishes while encouraging unity among Orthodox churches, died in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., of heart failure. It is with profound sadness that I hear of the death of our beloved His Eminence Metropolitan Philip Saliba. This was a man who epitomized humility and was most gracious in tending tending to his flock. As the son of an immigrant from the town of Arna, Syria, and a cousin of Father Michael, my father and mother began their lives in Portsmouth, Ohio, and it was my father who was one of the charter members of St. Georges Antiochan Orthodox Church in Canton, Ohio, where members of my family are still members, although I am now a member of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Richmond, Virginia.

I offer my heartfelt condolences to the family of Metropolitan Philip. May his memories be eternal.

May His Eminence Philip rest in the peace o Christ. He lived a live dedicated to Christ and his Church and accomplished much in his years as Metropolitan. He was an outstanding Orthodox Christian and a leading ecumenist in teaching Church understanding and harmony.
