The Chicago City Council passed an ordinance officially adding the honorary title “Metropolitan Iakovos Way” to Burton Place in Downtown Chicago in recognition of Metropolitan Iakovos’ years of service to Chicago citizens.

This recognition, a surprise to Metropolitan Iakovos, was unveiled at a private gathering at the Metropolis of Chicago offices at 40 East Burton Place on October 27. Later it was announced during the yearly Metropolitan Iakovos Name Day Dinner before an audience of clergy and parishioners from throughout the Metropolis of Chicago.

Metropolitan Iakovos has served as the spiritual leader of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago since May, 1979. Under his leadership the Metropolis has increased its efforts to assist the homeless and those in need, as witnessed in the labors of the Metropolis Philanthropy Committee. He has founded new Youth programs, established various local dialogues with other faith communities, and continues to work with area religious leaders in promoting justice in our society.

“It is the hope of the assembly that other Metropolises as well as other Orthodox denominations and other Catholic and Protestant Christian denominations will consider sending similar resolutions to their United States National Leadership,” said Bishop Demetrios, who is also chancellor of the Metropolis, adding that “Together we can bring about positive change to help protect Christians throughout the Middle East and bring an end to this destructive bloody conflict.”

Two communities in Chicago count their blessings every year and share them with those in need. Like most American urban centers, being in a good neighborhood actually means that right around the corner from you there might be someone in need. This is the case with the Annunciation Cathedral and St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Despite being in the posh Gold Coast and Lincoln Park, respectively, numerous low income areas are only blocks away from the two churches.
