The Panagia Soumela Monastery will remain closed until August 2018 due to restoration works ongoing since 2015.

The annual liturgy of the Greek Orthodox Church on August 15 — the Day of the Assumption of Virgin Mary — conducted by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, was not celebrated this year.

Trabzon MP Haluk Peksen, requested information on the re-opening schedule because tourism in the city has suffered from the closing of the monastery.

According to the website of the General Directorate of Museums and Cultural Heritage, the Panagia Soumela Monastery will reopen one day after Assumption Day, August 16, 2018.
