His Eminence Archbishop Damiaos of Sinai, Pharan, and Raitho, and Abbot of St. Catherine’s Monastery is expected to leave the Al-Galaa military hospital in Cairo sometime today, ending a nearly two-month stay after an accident in St. Catherine’s Monastery, reports Romfea.
He has fully recovered and is completely healthy.
The archbishop fell down an elevator shaft in the monastery from a height of 13 feet on January 29. The Egyptian government immediately sent a military helicopter to carry His Eminence to the hospital in Cairo, where they have been treating him since then.
Several Egyptian officials have visited the archbishop during his 50+ days in the hospital, including Egyptian Minister of Defense Sedki Sobhy who has visited him twice, conveying the warmest wishes for a quick recovery from President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. He has also been visited a few times by South Sinai Governor General Khalid Founta, who is known for his great love of the archbishop.
The governor visited Abp. Damianos just yesterday to express his satisfaction at seeing the hierarch fully recovered.
“I was really sad about the accident then, and today I am really happy to see the archbishop of Sinai fully healed and has overcome this vicissitude in his health. We are waiting for him again at St. Catherine’s to continue his important work,” General Founta said warmly.
Abp. Damianos has been the Sinai hierarch since December 1973.
