78 Orthodox churches of St. Petersburg have been selected for a popular vote for the Orthodox symbol of the city. Each of them is an important part of the religious, historical, and cultural heritage of the city.

As the site of the St. Petersburg Metropolitanate explains, St. Petersburg residents and guests of the city can participate in the competition that began on Monday and continues until November 18.

“There are about 300 churches in our city. There’s a great history behind all of them—it could be the history of the city, the country, or a history connected with outstanding cultural figures, or maybe even a personal history. We invite citizens and also everyone who holds St. Petersburg dear to express their attitude to the churches that adorn our city,” Natalia Rodomanova of the diocesan Information Department announced.

The competition is based on the creative abilities of those participating and is divided into two stages. All interested are invited to upload their photographs, paintings, videos, or literary works dedicated to their “favorite” church. From October 10 to 18, the jury will choose a winner for each category, who will receive various prizes. The 12 churches receiving the most number of works dedicated to them will then enter the second stage of the project.

The twelve finalist churches will be presented on October 18, and a final vote will be held on November 18. The Orthodox symbol of St. Petersburg will then be announced.

More information about the project and the creative works dedicated to the city’s churches can be found on the project website (in Russian).
