Trabzon’s famous Sümela Monastery to open soon

The first part of the picturesque Black Sea province of Trabzon’s great monument Sümela Monastery will finally be opened to visitors on May 18 following comprehensive restoration and rock improvement works.

Sümela Monastery, which is located on a steep and rocky area in the Karadağ Mountain in Altındere Valley and offers its guests a combination of nature, history and culture, has been closed to visitors due to extensive restoration and rock improvement works.

But the monastery, located in the district of Maçka, still draws an avalanche interest from local and foreign tourists.

The newly-restored basilica was originally dedicated in honor of the Holy Martyr Neophytes who was slain by Roman legionaries in 303 AD precisely on the site of the church.
