The Greek Church will grant $367,000 (333,000 euros) in 2019-2020 in scholarships for more than 80 Greek and international students. This decision was taken by the Greek Holy Synod under the chairmanship of His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece on Tuesday, reports Romfea.
In particular, scholarships were granted to 48 Greek students for postgraduate studies at universities and abroad and 37 students from other Orthodox Churches for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Greece. This was the second year in a row that the Synod granted scholarships in a special ceremony.
The Chairmann of the Scholarship Subcommittee, His Eminence Metropolitan Ignatios of Dimitrias and Almyros, emphasized that it was an achievement of the Church of Greece to maintain such generosity in such difficult times, noting that many of the recipients are distinguished for their work in their respective Local Churches.
Then two students, one Greek and one foreign, officially thanked Abp. Ieronymos and the Holy Synod for the great gift of the scholarship that are so important for their studies.
Abp. Ieronymos then noted that the members of the Subcommittee even endured financial cuts in order to meet the need for the scholarships.
In July it was reported that the Greek Church had given more than $136 million to various philanthropic events and projects in 2018, assisting more than 1 million people.
In April, the Holy Synod approved the allocation of $225,000 (200,000 euros) to 100 families whose homes were affected in the fires that swept through Attica in the summer of 2018. According to the last report, the number was upped to nearly $354,000 (316,000 euros) to 158 families
