Service book for priest and choir published in Portuguese

Portugal, November 20, 2019

An important new book for the liturgical life of the Orthodox faithful in Portugal was recently published.

After many years of hard work, the first full service book for priests, choirs, and readers in the Portuguese language is now available, reports the Portuguese Deanery of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Publication of the 336-page publication was carried out under the direction of the liturgist and candidate of theology Igumen Peter (Pruteanu) by the labors of professor of history and philology Luis Philippe Thomaz and Archpriest John Gerbovetsk, the dean of the Portuguese parishes in the Spanish-Portuguese Diocese.

The official publication was issued with the blessing of Archbishop Nestor of Madrid and Lisbon.

The book is divided into two parts, including the services of Vespers, Matins, the three Liturgies, prayers of absolution and various other prayers for priests, and psalms, antiphons, hymns, and troparia for choirs and readers. It also includes a calendar listing local and universal saints.

The translation of the liturgical texts was made from the original Greek, taking into account various modern translations. The texts have been translated into modern literary Portuguese, combining precise theological terminology and clarity of expressions with various explanations where necessary.

An official presentation of the book with the participation of Abp. Nestor is planned for next month. The introduction and table of contents can already be viewed online.

The book costs 15 euros and can be purchased by emailing ortodoxia.pt@gmail.com.

A Romanian monastery was also recently opened and consecrated in Portugal.
