Three masked men entered the residence of Patriarch Bartholomew in Istanbul while he was at a meeting with Greek compatriots, report a number of sources, including RIA-Novosti, with reference to the Greek-language Istanbul news paper “Anatolia.”

According to the paper, the incident occurred in the evening on Saturday, November 16. Security cameras recorded the three masked men, who were noticed by the housekeeper.

The men searched the house, but it is not clear if they stole anything. First reports indicate that they did not take anything.

The newspaper notes that the Patriarch’s residence is in a complex of buildings guarded by a private company, and it is unclear how the men entered unnoticed. The incident is thus considered quite suspicious, notes protothema.gr.

Turkish police were notified and have launched an investigation.
