Gulu, Uganda, December 5, 2019
Following on the heels of 75 catechumens being baptized in the Diocese of Gulu and Eastern Uganda in October, more than 60 were joyfully united to Christ yesterday in the Mystery of Baptism.
The Sacraments of Baptism and Chrismation were presided over by His Grace Bishop Silvester (Kisitu) of Gulu and Eastern Uganda at St. Nektarios Orthodox Community in Akonybedo, reports the diocese.
His Grace was assisted by several local priests, including the Gulu Dean Fr. Francis, the parish priest Fr. George, and a Fr. Benjamin.
Bp. Silvester counseled the newly-enlightened to be careful and live in faith, love, and prayer, keeping their souls pure. The parents and Godparents were also encouraged to lead holy lives for their children as they raise them in the faith.
His Grace also celebrated a mass Baptism in July.
There are 1.4 million Orthodox Christians in Uganda. The history of their presence in the nation can be read on the site of the Uganda Orthodox Church. A video was recently produced on the centennial of the Orthodox Church’s work in Uganda, and work on a new documentary on the mission work in the new Gulu Diocese is also underway.
