St. Herman’s Relics. A Film

In honor of St. Herman’s day, we are posting this film produced in 2006 by Yelena Matusevich, entitled, St. Herman’s relics. It narrates St. Herman’s mission through historical letters and contemporary commentary by local people—with an appearance by the memorable Dr. Lydia Black. The local Aleuts also talk about modern miracles of St. Herman, including Kodiak Island’s miraculous salvation from the Japanese. Of course, some my find it a little controversial regarding St. Herman’s relics, but all will doubtless be delighted by the ample footage shot on Spruce Island and the talks by Kodiak and Ouzinki natives.

Dear Editors: Thank you for posting this. While this film is truly a blessing, it is also rather poorly assembled - leaving more questions than answers. Some more background and context regarding the transfer of the relics to Kodiak would have been helpful. If at all possible, can you provide us with a little more information? Were the OCA hierarchs wrong in what they did? Who exactly did they think was going to steal the relics? What other "group" wanted the relics? Why were the people in Ouzinkie not informed of the transfer? Why did the OCA feel it was necessary to transfer St Herman to Kodiak, when it seems pretty clear he wanted to be on Spruce Island?
