Mother Mariam, the abbess of the Holy Monastery of the Panagia Amirou near Limassol, Cyprus, reposed in the Lord on Tuesday evening, May 5, reports the Orthodoxia News Agency.
She labored in the ascetic life for 35 years at the Monastery of St. Herkaleidios in Politiko, Cyprus, before being appointed and installed as abbess of Panagia Amirou by His Eminence Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol in 2002.
The renovation and restoration work on the 12th-century monastery, located at the foot of the Kakomali mountain range, northeast of Limassol, between the villages of Apsiou and Mathikoloni, begun by the previous abbess, Gerontissa Mariam, who reposed in 2001, was continued under the next Mariam. Today, five sisters live in the monastery.
The monastery has become especially famous in the last five years, as the Mother of God herself has appeared to many and invited them to visit her monastery and also miraculously healed many suffered from eye problems. It is home to a healing spring and wonderworking icon of the Theotokos.
May Mother Mariam’s memory be eternal!
