Sergiev Posad, Russia, May 15, 2020
Yesterday, May 14, Hieromonk Modest (Panchenko) of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra reposed in the Lord at the age of 45 from complications due to a coronavirus infection, reports the monastery website.
Fr. Modest is the fifth monastic of the Lavra to die from COVID-19.
The Lavra already lost Igumen Tikhon (Barsukov), Archimandrite Ilian (Plemenyuk), Archimandrite Lavrenty (Postnikov), and Hierodeacon Kallist (Kosulin) to the coronavirus in recent weeks.
May their memories be eternal!
Hieromonk Modest was born on June 6, 1974 in the city of Dneprodzerzhinsk, Ukraine. He entered the Moscow Theological Seminary in 1996 and joined the brotherhood of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra in his last year of seminary. He then continued his studies at the Theological Academy.
He was tonsured with the name of Modest in 2001. He was ordained as a hierodeacon on August 18, 2002, and as a hieromonk on December 2, 2007.
Fr. Modest was engaged in educational and missionary work, teaching at a number of parishes, monasteries, boarding schools, and Orthodox universities.
The pupils of the boarding school remember Fr. Modest as a man of great kindness and love. His paternal love was enough to heal any wound in the life of the orphans.
