Bryukhovichi, Ukraine, May 21, 2020
All the churches of the Lvov Province in Ukraine must unite in order to counter the global coronavirus pandemic, representatives of the of the Catholic church, the Uniate Greek Catholic church, and the schismatic “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” said in a recent unity ceremony.
The three confessions came together on May 15 in the village of Bryukhovichi at the Higher Theological Seminary of the Lvov Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic church in Ukraine to plant a maple tree, which is to become a symbol of their unity, reports the site of the Catholic Lvov Archdiocese.
The schismatic OCU was represented by “Metropolitan” Makary Maletich (formerly the head of the “Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church), the Latin rite Catholics by Bishop Emeritus Maryan Buchek, and the Uniates by Archbishop Igor Voznyak.
The OCU schismatics have served with the Uniates and Catholics several times. In February, the Metropolis of Piraeus of the Church of Greece published a text arguing and outlining how the Ukrainian schismatics promote the unification of Orthodoxy and the Papacy—something which the Uniate head, Svyatoslav Shevchuk, has openly spoken about.
