Despite the best efforts of local firefighters, the wooden Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh at Gremyachiy Spring in the village of Vzglyadnevo burned to the ground early in the morning of Saturday May 23.

The church is part of a skete of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra.

The rest of the skete’s buildings remained unharmed, and there were no casualties, reports the Lavra’s website.

The cause of the fire is still being determined, though according to preliminary information, it was due to a short circuit of electric heating equipment, the Lavra’s spokesman Hierodeacon Nikon (Rigin) told TASS.

The Church of St. Sergius at Gremyachiy Spring was built in 2001, replacing a church that also burned down in the 1990s.
