On May 22, the feast of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, himself known to have helped the poor, the parish of St. Matrona of Moscow in Davao City on the Filipino island of Mindanao extended a loving hand to the poorest families in the area.

Unable to work or farm during the already two months of quarantine, many families are greatly suffering, having nothing to eat at all. More than 70 of these destitute families received food care packages from the Orthodox parish, reports the Diocese of the Philippines and Vietnam of the Russian Orthodox Church’s Patriarchal Exarchate of Southeast Asia.

The aid was collected with the support of the Synodal Department for Church Charity and Social Services and the Russian embassy in the Philippines.

Diocesan Secretary Hieromonk Cornelius (Molev) read a prayer for the end of the pandemic and sprinkled the food with Holy Water before distributing it to the families.

The same aid was organized by Fr. Roman Buniel and volunteers in Kiamba, also on the island of Mindanao.

Hieromonk Cornelius Molev was the one who gave me the Catechism of the Russian Orthodox Church.
