Four objects of cultural heritage in the Pereslavl Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church have been pinpointed to receive federal funds for emergency restoration and conservation works.

In all, the Russian Ministry of Culture has decided to allocate $506,450 (35 million rubles) to the Church of Metropolitan Peter in Pereslavl-Zalessky, part of the wall of the Sts. Boris and Gleb Monastery, and two churches of the Resurrection Monastery in Uglich, reports the Russian Synodal Department for Monasteries and Monasticism.

“The central section of the eastern wall from the 17th century, which is part of the Sts. Boris and Gleb Monastery ensemble, has about a 1-meter bulge outward,” explains Yulia Epishkina, the head of the Diocesan Cultural Heritage Department.

“There is a real threat of the wall collapsing onto the sidewalk and path next to it,” she said, adding that the planned work involves a number of measures to protect the wall from collapse.

In the Resurrection Monastery, restoration work will be carried out on the roofs and emergency structures of the Cathedral of the Resurrection and the Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, both from the 17th century.

One of the most notable objects is the 16th-century Church of Metropolitan Peter which has required restoration for years, though it has not received any grants in the past. Thanks to the Ministry of Culture’s funds, the brickwork will be repaired in 2020-2021, as well as the roofing and domes.

The restoration works are planned to begin this year.
