Many years! Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine celebrates his name’s day today (+VIDEOS)

Kiev, June 25, 2020

Today, June 25, the feast day of St. Onuphrios the Great, marks the name’s day of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine, the beloved archpastor of the Ukrainian faithful who is loved and respected throughout the Orthodox world.

Met. Onuphry, then a 25-year-old novice, was tonsured on March 18, 1971 at the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra, receiving the name of the great 4th-century desert father.

The celebration of the feast and His Beatitude’s name’s day began last night with the celebration of the All-Night Vigil on the square in front of the Holy Dormition Cathedral at the Kiev Caves Lavra. Met. Onuphry was concelebrated by a number of hierarchs and clerics of the Ukrainian Church, reports the UOC’s Information-Education Department.

His Beatitude also celebrated the Divine Liturgy today on the square in front of the cathedral, again joined by a number of hierarchs and clergy.

Traditionally, hierarchical representatives from the Local Churches travel to Kiev to celebrate Met. Onuphry’s name’s day with him, though celebrations were limited this year to the coronavirus pandemic. Last year, His Beatitude was joined by representatives from the Alexandrian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Cypriot, Polish, and Czech-Slovak Churches as well as the Orthodox Church in America.

Congratulating Met. Onuphry on his name’s day, His Eminence Metropolitan Anthony of Boryspil and Brovary, the Chancellor of the UOC, told His Beatitude: “For me, you are a model of a true pastor, spiritual mentor, and true Christian.”

“I greatly appreciate the opportunity to serve in the Church with you, under your spiritual guidance and wise guidance. All your instructions are gathered in my heart as the greatest treasure, every conversation with you leaves a trace in my soul. Your words always strengthen and comfort, the warmth of your loving heart tirelessly warms all those who need validation and support,” he continued.

“You have repeatedly demonstrated your stability and steadfastness in faith in various situations throughout your ministry. All your priceless qualities—fortitude, fearlessness, optimism—greatly support and inspire us, Orthodox Christians. May the Lord, Who has lavished His mercies and gifts upon you, strengthen you in your further ministry and grant everything you need to save your soul,” Met. Anthony concluded, wishing Met. Onuphry many years of health, strength, and vigor.

Many years! Metropolitan Onuphry is an exemplar of a true Christian, and humbly inspiring. Indeed, he is the right man for this task at this time, as a dear Ukranian friend expressed it to me.
