Piraeus, Greece, August 14, 2020
While the entire world has been brought to its knees by the coronavirus, proving our infirmity, we can always run to the embrace of the Most Holy Theotokos, who is our sure hope and constant intercessor before the Lord, His Eminence Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus of the Church of Greece preached on Tuesday evening in the Church of St. Nilos in Piraeus.
“The Most Holy Theotokos is the direct partner of God in the work of salvation and regeneration of the world. God has given us a mother, a person entirely our own, related to us; a gift of Heaven to Earth, but at the same time an indescribable offer of humanity to Holy God,” Met. Seraphim preached, reports Romfea.
“We owe infinite gratitude to the Theotokos because she is the guarantee of our salvation, she is the model of our life. Through her we too can overcome death and decay, become myrrh-bearers, as long as we purify ourselves, as her true children, from every demonic distraction and smallness. Аs a true child of the Theotokos, St. Nilos overcame decay and death,” His Eminence said.
The Theotokos is the “criterion of the Orthodox faith; she is the bridge that lifts us up to Heaven and brings us up to her Son,” the Metropolitan added.
And addressing today’s situation, he stated: “Of course every season has its own difficulties, but today we see that an invisible microorganism … has overwhelmed the entire planet and has put everyone in fear of death and disease.”
“This microorganism demonstrates our smallness, since huge, powerful countries, in the face of this pandemic, submit naively. And yet our technology, our supposed progress is powerless in the face of such an infinitesimal microorganism,” he continued.
“We are called to understand our limits and to fall into the motherly embrace of our Mother, to understand how much need we have of her protection, her cover, and her motherly boldness and affection. Only then will we have the opportunity, like St. Nilos, to overcome death, disease, and decay, which we have unfortunately acquired by misusing our freedom,” His Eminence concluded.
